SuBAMUH was founded in 1979 and incorporated in 1992. It received tax exempt status from the IRS in 1995 as a feminist education center.
A 100-year-old farmhouse and 3 outbuildings were on the land at the time of purchase. Since that time, 3 additional dwellings and a guest cabin have been added.
Educational programs were begun in 1984. Events in the early years included Ohio Womyn’s Peace Walk Workshop, Older Womyn’s Weekend, cooperative work days, womyn’s music festival, Ohio Re-Evaluation Counseling Womyn’s Workshop.
In May 2018 SuBAMUH departed from the previous women-only policies to welcome a new land group that is LGBTQ-focused and gender-inclusive. This decision was not made lightly and is an effort to continue the mission of feminist education, safe space, and land stewardship in a changing landscape and community.
